OIFF Special Event: “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” by Robert Wiene accompanied by the cult British punk cabaret band “The Tiger Lillies”
The 10th Odesa International Film Festival will present the German classic of silent cinema, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” by Robert Wiene. The special screening will be accompanied by a British musical trio “The Tiger Lillies”. The event will take place at the Green Theatre on July 17.
The premiere of Robert Wiene’s “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” was held in Berlin in 1920. It was this film that marked the beginning of German expressionism in cinema. This was the first film in the history of cinema where the change of human consciousness was depicted. The plot of the film is based on the mysterious events associated with the arrival of a mysterious doctor Caligari to a small German town. The script of the film was written by Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz as a metaphor for the madness of authority that subjugates its people to terrible things – meaning the lost by Germany First World War. In addition, the script also includes the personal experiences of the scriptwriters and their life stories.
Within the framework of the 10th Odesa International Film Festival, the special screening of the film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” by Robert Wiene at the Green Theatre will be held to the musical accompaniment of “The Tiger Lillies”.
“Music came to me very easily, it was great to just sit back, watch this brilliant film and write music to it, really amazing. I like silent film, because it was really an international environment, and now it’s not that at all – you cannot just watch a film from another country, because dubbing can change everything. I also like the characteristic darkness of early cinema – I like to look at all those ghosts – they look like ghosts, and they are already ghosts”, said Martin Jacques, the leader of the band “The Tiger Lillies”, who worked on the music for the film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”.
The musical trio “The Tiger Lillies” was formed in 1989. In the early 90's the avant-garde band was distinguished by its recognizable sound and style. “The Tiger Lillies” is a mixture of pre-war Berlin cabaret, anarchist opera, and Gypsy music, which repeats the voices of Berthold Brecht and Jacques Brel. The main distinctive feature of the trio is their stage costumes and make-up. The music of “The Tiger Lillies” also always has a touch of black humor – their work is somethimes described as “surrealistic pornography”. The texts of their songs cover all the dark aspects of life, from prostitution and drug abuse to violence and despair. Due to its extraordinary character, the band quickly gained popularity from ordinary London pubs to the Piccadilly Theatre. “The Tiger Lillies” traveled around the world with concerts, and repeatedly participated in various artistic and theatrical productions, including “Shockheaded Peter”, “Hamlet”, and “The Freak Show”. In total, “The Tiger Lillies” have released about 35 albums. The trio was nominated for the Grammy Award for their album “The Gorey End”, recorded with the American string quartet “Kronos Quartet” (2003). Also, the band is the winner of the prestigious British theatrical award – Laurence Olivier Award for the “Shockheaded Peter” theatrical production.
