On Friday 22nd and Monday 25th March Martyn Jacques will be performing his acclaimed live soundtrack to the classic silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in Leeds and Manchester respectively.
‘Other musicians have ‘done’ Caligari live. What makes Jacques such a good fit is his grasp of the film’s uniquely haunting atmosphere of seedy carnival corruption and funereal beauty… Spellbinding'. **** The Times
The story of the sinister Dr Caligari and his fairground attraction arriving in the small town of Holstenwall is the perfect match for Jacques’ tender and grotesque songs. He accompanies himself on accordion and piano in a one-man show that is wonderfully rich, lyrical and heartbreaking in equal measure. A freak show in the fairground… very Tiger Lillies!
You can get tickets for the Leeds show at the Howard Assembly Room at this link and for the Manchester performance at the Royal Northern College of Music here.

The Tiger Lillies are currently performing a run of their new show The Either/Or Cabaret (renamed The Seducers Diary in China) at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. Time Out Shanghai had this to say:
"A salute to Soren Kierkegaard’s Either/Or by the Brechtian punk cabaret band Tiger Lillies – bold, irreverent and more laughs than you could ever expect from the dour – or indeed any – philosopher. Not to be missed."
You can read their article about the band and the show at this link.

La Bollshe Vita!
“August 21st 1968 – a young couple is breaking up on the background of the first day of Czechoslovakia´s occupation.“
A relationship of two young people paraphrases the “relationship“ of ČSSR and SSSR during the Soviet occupation. Patricie as ČSSR desires freedom which Michal as SSSR does not want to give her.

Troma Entertainment is pleased to announce that cult British musical trio Tiger Lillies will be featured prominently on the soundtrack for the latest Troma Team production, Return to Nuke ‘Em High Vol. I & II, an event film directed by Lloyd Kaufman. “With the Tiger Lillies’ consistent themes of bestiality, prostitution, and blasphemy in their music, the Troma Team knew instantly they were a perfect fit for the soundtrack of the fourth installment in Troma’s successful Class of Nuke ‘Em High series,” says Troma President Lloyd Kaufman. “Now we have the edge over Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer.”
“On a packed plane flying from Berlin to London for Xmas,” Tiger Lillies founder Martyn Jacques wrote recently in a message to the Troma Team, ” and feeling deeply moved and very excited to be featured in an esteemable Troma film production!”

Happy new year everyone, we thought we'd kick off 2013 with a new show and album! The Either/Or Cabaret will premiere in Odense, Denmark on the 24th January where it will run until mid-February. It will then tour to Shanghai and then to other countries over the next couple of years.
The album of the same name will be released very soon (it's finished, I have a copy in my hands) and features songs that you may of heard on tour recently - Blood Alley, Nothing Is Sin, He' s so Bad, Tears in the Rain. It will be available from the shop here. The album and show both feature the UK based musician David Coulter who worked with The Tiger Lillies on the Rain Dogs Revisited project a couple of years ago and the work of Mark Holthusen, the photographer who created all of the imagery for The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Martyn based the songs on the work of the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and the show features a cast of Chinese and Danish performers.
THE EITHER/OR CABARET takes place in a nightclub in Shanghai in 1937, where Chinese and Europeans live their dreams. Outside the city swarm with enemies. Should the nightclub patrons stay or flee?
Together with the world renowned and Grammy nominated British cult band The Tiger Lillies, five Danish and five Chinese actors take us on a wordless journey, through newly composed and highly visual music. In the 1930s Shanghai was more sinful than Berlin and Chicago combined. The city nicknamed Sin City was heaven and hell on earth for stranded Russians fleeing the revolution, Jews fleeing Nazism and Chinese in search of happiness. In the midst of this frightening and yet captivating maelstrom of self-expression flourished a lively night-life with exotic dancers, gigolos and inveterate hedonists.
Lead singer of The Tiger Lillies, Martyn Jacques, has written the music and the performance’s libretto – which is profoundly original and at the same time very loyal to the work of Søren Kierkegaard.
THE EITHER/OR CABARET is our contribution to the celebration of the bicentennial of the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's birth in 2013. The show is performed in English and will be playing in Shanghai in February 2013. THE EITHER/OR CABARET is a Co-production between Odense Teater, Theatre NoDomain and Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre.
The performance is sponsored by the Danish Arts Council Committee for the Performing Arts and Bikuben Foundation.
